Washington, DC, USA (us.gov.krd) – Tom Kmeic, member of the Canadian Parliament, has initiated and funded the Kurdish Research Study Project to collect demographic data across Kurdish communities in Canada.

The Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in the United States, which provides services to the Kurdistani community across all of North America, welcomes the project and encourages members of the diaspora to participate.

The project aims to enable the Canadian Government to foster a strong relationship with Kurdish communities and have an approximation number of Kurds across Canada. The MPs say that by reaching out to Kurdish communities in Canada, the Canadian Government will be able to achieve better and precise communication with all the Kurdish communities. Further, by collecting demographic data across Kurdish communities in Canada, their initiative will allow them to better identify and cater to the needs and aspirations of Canadian Kurds.

One example of how this project can benefit the community is that it will be important in enabling the Canadian Government to reach out to Kurdish communities during important annual events such as Newroz celebrations, Halabja genocide commemorations and Yezidi genocide remembrance. 

Ms. Ashti Waissi, the Research Advisor and Members Assistant at the House of Commons of Canada, is the project administrator, which is to be completed on August 31, 2021.
