KRG Envoy and Congressman Waltz discuss impact of arbitration ruling on Kurdistan and world energy market

Washington DC, USA (us.gov.krd) – The KRG envoy to the United States, Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, met with Congressman Michael Waltz (Republican of Florida), Co-Chair of the Kurdish-American Congressional Caucus, on March 28, 2023.

They discussed security developments in the region as well as political and economic ties. Congressman Walz and Representative Abdul Rahman discussed the decision by the International Court of Arbitration on the dispute between Iraq and Turkey, which has impacted Kurdistan’s oil exports. He expressed his concern that nearly 500,000 barrels of oil per day could now be lost to the international energy market.

Ms. Abdul Rahman warmly thanked Congressman Waltz for his support to the Kurdistan Region. ‘We appreciate Congressman Waltz’s commitment to the Kurdistan Region and his support for our security and economic development,’ said Ms. Abdul Rahman. ‘We look forward to continuing our close cooperation with him and the other members of the Kurdish-American Congressional Caucus.’

Congressman Waltz is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He has in the past  called on the U.S. government to provide more support to the KRG as America’s partner and as a factor for stability in all of Iraq.
