KRG and State Department discuss attacks against Kurdistan Region



Washington DC, USA (us.gov.krd) – Representative Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman met with Karen Bronson, Acting Director of Iraq Affairs, and Michael Day, Senior Advisor for Kurdish Affairs, at the US State Department on November 22, 2022, to discuss recent political and security developments, including Iranian attacks on the Kurdistan Region.

In October and November, the Kurdistan Region has come under attack from Iran which has also threatened to carry out a ground-offensive after it accused Iranian-Kurdish groups inside Iraq of stoking protests in Iran.

In response to the repeated attacks which have caused casualties, leaders of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi federal government condemned the violation of Iraqi sovereignty and the danger to civilians.

In her meeting with the State Department, Representative Abdul Rahman reiterated the KRG’s commitment to being a factor for stability in Iraq and to not allowing any groups to use its territory to attacks its neighbors.

The Representative and State Department officials also discussed the progress of the new Iraqi cabinet as well as cultural exchanges between Kurdistan and the United States.
