The Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in the United States organized and coordinated a series of diplomatic engagements in New York City to support the Kurdistan Region’s continued outreach at the United Nations and with the international diplomatic community. The meetings reflected the KRG’s broader efforts to strengthen engagement with foreign missions, UN agencies, and international policy institutions on issues affecting the Kurdistan Region and the wider Middle East.
KRG Representative Aziz and Ms. Bayan AbdulRahman, Senior Advisor to Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on International Affairs, focused their discussion on current developments in the region and the challenges faced in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
Strengthening Relations with Foreign Missions at the United Nations
As part of the visit, the KRG delegation held meetings with representatives from several permanent missions to the United Nations, including the US Mission to the UN, the Permanent Mission of Germany, the French Mission, the EU Mission, the Italian Mission, the Iraqi Mission, the Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates, and the Permanent Mission of Türkiye.
The discussions provided an opportunity to exchange views on developments in Iraq and the wider region, while highlighting the Kurdistan Region’s continued role as a reliable partner in promoting stability, coexistence, and constructive dialogue. The meetings also reinforced the value of maintaining strong diplomatic engagement between the KRG and international partners represented at the United Nations.
Engagement with UN Agencies and International Organizations
The visit also included meetings with senior officials from key United Nations bodies, including the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, the UN Environment Programme, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Discussions focused on areas of shared concern, including support for displaced communities, environmental resilience, peacebuilding efforts, and long-term regional stability. The meetings underscored the importance of continued cooperation between the Kurdistan Regional Government, UN agencies, and international partners in addressing ongoing regional challenges.
In addition, the delegation engaged with the International Crisis Group to exchange perspectives on political and security developments in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the broader Middle East.
Through these meetings, the KRG Representation continued its efforts to strengthen the Kurdistan Region’s international partnerships and ensure that the Kurdistan Region’s priorities remain part of important diplomatic discussions in New York. The engagements reflected the KRG’s commitment to active international diplomacy, regional stability, and sustained cooperation with the United Nations and foreign missions.
