The Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in the United States welcomed graduate students from American University’s School of International Service for an educational and cultural program focused on the Kurdistan Region, its history, and its role in today’s regional landscape.
The event was organized in partnership with American University’s School of International Service and Dr. Yerevan Saeed and brought together students, Barzani Fellows, and members of the KRG-US team for an evening of discussion and exchange.
KRG-US Representative H.E. Treefa Aziz welcomed the students and spoke about the importance of university engagement in building greater understanding of the Kurdistan Region. Her remarks highlighted Kurdistan’s history, its relationship with the United States, and the value of creating opportunities for students to engage directly with Kurdish perspectives on regional political, security, economic, and cultural issues.
Guests also viewed a short video introducing the Kurdistan Region and highlighting its people, landscapes, culture, and development.
Aheen Hajibadri, a Barzani Peace Fellow at the Global Kurdish Initiative for Peace and a master’s student at American University’s School of International Service, also addressed the group. Hajibadri previously led the Kurdish Student Organization at George Mason University and has been active in efforts to build connections between Kurdish students, academic institutions, and the broader Washington community.
Dr. Yerevan Saeed joined the program and offered additional remarks, contributing his perspective on the Kurdistan Region and the importance of academic engagement and informed discussion.
The evening provided students with an opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas, and speak directly with representatives and fellows about the Kurdistan Region’s history, current regional dynamics, and relationship with the United States.
Educational engagement remains an important part of KRG-US public diplomacy. By working with universities and students, the Representation seeks to strengthen awareness of the Kurdistan Region, encourage informed discussion, and build lasting connections with the next generation of scholars and policy professionals.
