History of KRG US Representation

In April 2004, H.E. Qubad Talabani was appointed Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government to the United States. Following the unification of the KRG in 2005, he was the first person to serve in this role. The current Representative is Treefa Aziz.

The KRG US Representation is located in an early 20th-century row house near historic Dupont Circle on 16^th Street, blocks away from the White House, Capitol Building, and various embassies and consulates. The Representation moved into its current location on September 17, 2009, under the leadership of Mr. Qubad Talabani and with the guidance of President Nechirvan Barzani. The Representation previously occupied a building centrally located at 1634 I Street NW, above to Farragut West Metro Station.

The Representation exists to promote the interests of the people of the Kurdistan Region.

In its short existence, the KRG US mission has been responsible for raising awareness of myriad issues related to security, governance, economy, and culture in Kurdistan, including lobbying for recognition of the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein and later by ISIS, rallying supporting for Kurdistan’s Peshmerga soldiers in the war against ISIS, and promoting dialogue between Kurdistan and US lawmakers, policymakers, experts, business leaders, and more.
