Throughout August, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani continued to emphasize dialogue, cooperation, and stronger state institutions as Iraq and the wider region navigate political, economic, and security challenges.
Through official engagements in Baghdad and Damascus, President Barzani addressed relations between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government, Iraq’s political and security environment, regional stability, and opportunities to strengthen cooperation with neighboring countries.
Strengthening Cooperation in Baghdad
During his August 5 visit to Baghdad, President Barzani met with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and participated in a meeting of Iraq’s State Administration Coalition.
Discussions focused on Iraq’s overall political and economic situation, security challenges, relations between Erbil and Baghdad, and regional and international developments affecting the country. President Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s support for the federal government’s initiatives and stressed the importance of cooperation among Iraq’s state institutions in strengthening political and security stability.
The discussions also underscored the importance of political unity, coordination among state institutions, and safeguarding Iraq against security threats. President Barzani and Prime Minister al-Zaidi further emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad.
Advancing Erbil-Baghdad Relations

The President has continued to emphasize the importance of addressing longstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad through dialogue and within the framework of Iraq’s Constitution. Regional Engagement in Syria
On August 3, President Barzani traveled to Damascus at the invitation of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, marking his first official visit to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime.
During his meeting with President al-Sharaa, the two sides discussed relations between Syria, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region, with particular emphasis on strengthening economic cooperation and coordination. They also exchanged views on regional developments and issues of mutual interest, underscoring the importance of security, stability, and broader regional cooperation.
President Barzani emphasized the importance of a stable and united Syria, peaceful dialogue, and cooperation among the region’s communities. He also highlighted the potential for stronger economic ties and cooperation between Syria, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region.
The visit reflected the Kurdistan Region’s continued commitment to constructive regional engagement and to supporting peaceful solutions to political and security challenges.
