Earlier this month, the Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in the United States had the honor of welcoming Guhdar Sheekhoo, Head of the Independent Zakho Administration, to Washington, D.C., for a series of engagements aimed at strengthening Kurdistan–U.S. ties.
During the visit, Mr. Sheekhoo met with the Representation team to discuss regional developments and Zakho’s growing role as an engine of economic progress in the Kurdistan Region. The meeting highlighted Zakho’s recent successes in infrastructure, trade, and investment, and served as a platform for exploring new avenues of cooperation between Zakho and U.S. partners.
A major milestone of the visit was the signing of a Friendship Proclamation between Zakho and Moorhead, Minnesota. Signed by Mr. Sheekhoo and Mayor Shelly Carlson, the proclamation formalizes a people-to-people partnership rooted in shared values and a commitment to long-term collaboration. The agreement sets the stage for sustained cooperation in education, cultural exchange, and economic development.
This growing relationship reflects the broader vision of deepening ties between the United States and the Kurdistan Region—through diplomacy, investment, and community partnerships that span both governments and citizens. The Representation looks forward to supporting this partnership and expanding engagement between American cities and Kurdish communities.
