KRG Representation in the United States Participates in Newroz Events Across the DMV Area

The Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in the United States (KRG-US) proudly participated in a series of Newroz events across the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area, marking the Kurdish New Year alongside the local diaspora and international partners.

These events brought together nearly 1,000 attendees, reflecting the strength, resilience, and cultural pride of the Kurdish community during a time of heightened regional tension.

Community-Led Newroz Event in Virginia

On March 21, the Kurdish community of the greater Washington, DC area hosted a large Newroz event in Virginia, bringing together nearly 1,000 attendees for an evening of culture and unity.

The event welcomed distinguished guests, including representatives from the U.S. government and State Department, congressional offices, and members of the diplomatic and policy community, who joined in solidarity with the Kurdish people.

The gathering served as a meaningful expression of Kurdish identity and cohesion. In a message to attendees, organizers noted that in a challenging time for the Kurdish people, the community is coming together in solidarity, unity, and resilience to overcome hardship.

The evening featured musical performances by Jegr Medya and Salam Nheli, along with traditional dance, food, and community engagement. The celebration underscored the enduring significance of Newroz as both a cultural tradition and a symbol of renewal for Kurds around the world.

Showcasing Kurdish Culture at the Smithsonian

In addition, KRG-US participated in the “Nowruz Traditions from Across Asia” event hosted by the National Museum of Asian Art in Washington on March 26.

Held at Gallery 27 of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the event brought together embassies and cultural institutions representing “Nowruz traditions from across Asia.” The KRG Representation joined international partners, including the embassies of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, to showcase Kurdish heritage through cultural displays and engagement with the public.

The event formed part of the Smithsonian’s broader “Our Shared Future: 250” initiative, highlighting the diversity of cultural traditions that contribute to the American experience.

Newroz: A Tradition of Renewal and Resilience

Newroz, meaning “new day,” marks the arrival of spring and the Kurdish New Year, with roots tracing back over 3,000 years. Today, it is celebrated by more than 300 million people worldwide, including across the United States.

For the Kurdish people, Newroz carries deep historical and symbolic meaning, representing renewal, resistance, and hope. This year’s observances in the DMV area were particularly significant, as communities gathered not only to celebrate but also to reaffirm unity in the face of ongoing regional challenges.

Strengthening Cultural and Community Ties

KRG-US participation in both community-led and institutional events reflects its continued commitment to engaging the Kurdish diaspora, promoting cultural diplomacy, and strengthening people-to-people ties in the United States.

From a large-scale community gathering in Virginia to a multicultural showcase at the Smithsonian, these celebrations demonstrated the vibrancy of Kurdish culture and its enduring place within the diverse fabric of American society.

As Newroz marks a new beginning, these events served as a reminder that Kurdish identity, resilience, and unity continue to thrive, both in the Kurdistan Region and across the global diaspora.
