KRG delegation underscores significant role of UN assistance to Kurdistan and Iraq



New York City, NY, USA (us.gov.krd) - Dr. Fuad Hussein, Chief of Staff to the Kurdistan Region Presidency, Falah Mustafa Bakir, Head of the Department of Foreign Relations, and Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, KRG Representative to the United States, traveled to New York this week for meetings with diplomats based at the United Nations.

The delegation met with six diplomats at their respective missions, four of which sit on the UN Security Council: Ambassador Stephen Hickey, Political Co-ordinator at the UK Mission to the United Nations; Ambassador Carl Skau, Alternate Representative of Sweden to the Security Council; Anne Gueguen, Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations; Counsellor Cheng Lie, Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the UN; Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations; and Ambassador Christoph Heusgen, Permanent Representative of Germany.

In every meeting, the KRG delegation updated the diplomats on political, humanitarian, and security developments in Iraq and Kurdistan, the upcoming Iraqi elections and highlighted the importance of continued UN engagement in Iraq and the role of UN Mission In Iraq (UNAMI). They thanked the members of the counter-ISIS coalition for their role in supporting the peshmerga and Iraqi forces in the fight against Islamic State and reiterated the need for stabilization, humanitarian assistance and justice and accountability in order to bring stability and reconciliation to th country. 

The delegation also met with the New York Times Editorial Board and was hosted for lunch with the members of the Permanent Mission of Iraq.
