KRG envoy answers questions from Kansas City International Relations Council members

Washington, DC, USA (us.gov.krd) – On Wednesday, February 24, Representative Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman was the guest of the Kansas City International Relations Council and answered Council members' questions about the Kurdistan Region.

In a virtual event titled The Middle East from Kurdistan's Perspective, Ms. Abdul Rahman explained the Kurdistan Region's recent history and current developments.

She noted that 2021 is the 30th anniversary of Operation Provide Comfort, the humanitarian-military operation launched by the United States and other partners in the spring of 1991 to protect Kurdish refugees fleeing their homes after the Iraqi regime tried to crush the uprising against Saddam Hussein's dictatorship.

She said that Operation Provide Comfort, and the no-fly-zone that was established later to protect Kurdistan, gave the Kurds the opportunity at self-government and laid the foundations for the Region's achievements today and its partnership with the United States. She answered several questions on heritage and diversity of Kurdistan, as well as political and security-related matters.
