KRG envoy and USCIRF Chair discuss religious freedom in Kurdistan and the region

Washington, DC, USA (us.gov.krd) – KRG Representative Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman and Nadine Maenza, Chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, met last week to discuss the conditions of religious components in Kurdistan, Iraq and the wider region.

In a virtual meeting, they looked back on developments in 2021, including the visit of Pope Francis to Iraq and Kurdistan, which put the spotlight on the Christian community as well as other minorities in Iraq.

They also exchanged views on the security, environmental, political and economic situation and how that impacts stability and the confidence of religious and ethnic minorities in their future in the country.

The Representative underscored the KRG’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and the protection of people of all faiths.
