KRG Anfal Ministry concludes trip to United States with a visit to New York



New York City, NY, USA (us.gov.krd) - A delegation led by Minister of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs Mahmood Haji Salih completed their visit to the United States on Monday. After a week in Washington, the delegation traveled to New York to meet with experts on genocide. KRG Representative to the US Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman joined the delegation for their meetings.

The delegation traveled to the Museum of Jewish Heritage to meet with the museum’s President Michael S. Glickman. During the meeting, they explored areas of potential cooperation, and discussed what Kurdistan could learn from the expertise of museum in terms of design and exhibition of documents and artifacts, and the use of technology in commemorating genocide. President Glickman also accompanied the delegation for a tour of museum.

Minister Salih and Representative Abdul Rahman met with experts from the office of the United Nations’ Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict. During the meetings they discussed the setting of proper mechanisms to ensure justice for the victims of sexual violence in Kurdistan, who are mainly Yezidis and other minorities. They also talked about the importance of including all relevant sides in the accountability process, and highlighted the need for further cooperation between KRG and the office of the Special Representative on sexual violence issues in Iraq.

The visit to New York follows on a week-long visit to Washington where they met with members of Congress and senior administration officials.
